What exactly is evolution?

So I am to understand that evolution is simply the progression of development of a species. I am also to understand that the forms of life that are in existence now are the ones that had the most favorable traits to survive.

If all this is true, why are we so concerned with actively preserving the environment? If countless creatures have died off over the millennia then why does it matter if more do so? Is that not the natural course of things under Darwinian Evolution?

I, for one, believe in Creation. If God created all the creatures and made us humans stewards of the creation He made, then it would make sense for us to take care of the environment. Under these conditions it is also our responsibility to care for other people. This includes the unborn.

The question becomes how we go about being good stewards of the environment and how we go about caring for other people.

Recycling, picking up after ourselves, not leaving lights on in rooms no one is in are all perfectly reasonable things to do. Hybrid vehicles can be helpful if the manufacturing practices are not even more detrimental to the environment.

Ethanol is a bad idea. All it is doing is driving up food prices. That is not a helpful thing to be doing. Is it not already hard enough for poor people to afford healthy food? Why make it worse?

It is also a little considered fact that the water cycle has a lot to do with what is happening with the weather. If the air ends up being scrubbed so clean that it is devoid of fine particulates, what is the evaporated water going to condense on? If the water has nothing to condense on, what you end up with is a drought. This does not sound like a good thing for the environment.

The next question is what to do about caring for other people. We are often told that we need an abundance of government funded programs to tend to the poor. Why? What is it that makes the government so qualified? If every individual made an effort to do what they could where they are, how many people could be helped? If churches cared more about making a difference in their community than in how many pew warmers they had how many could be helped? If communities got serious about cleaning up their own streets, how much less crime and blight would we have? What we need is for people to stop playing the victim and start doing something about their own life.

Affirmative Action has the same problem. While Affirmative Action is not officially in effect, unofficially, you still hear a lot about diversity being paramount. This is insulting no matter what color you happen to be. What they are saying is that minorities can’t get anywhere on their own merits; they need a government sanctioned hand-out. Is that not insulting?

Then we have the whole abortion issue. Why is a life only a life when the woman wants the life to be a life? If a pregnant woman is hit by a drunk driver, the report says she and her unborn child were killed. If she kills the same child it is her choice. How does that work? Why is it murder when the drunk driver kills the child, but not when the mother kills the child?

Imponderables

I had been planning on setting up a blog a while ago, but I wasn’t too sure anyone really wanted to read my random ramblings. I guess we are about to find out.

 

There are so many things in this world that just don’t make any sense to me. I don’t know if this is because I’m so extraordinarily different than most people or this is because other people have come to accept what they are told without ever actually thinking about it, but in either case I live my life in seemingly perpetual bewilderment.

 

Why are we told time and again that there is no such thing as absolute truth? This makes no sense.

 

If there is no such thing as absolute truth, than how can there be a right and wrong? If there is no such thing as right and wrong than how can we have laws or education?

 

If personal truth is all that matters than what do we do if the student says “It is my personal truth that two plus two equals five”? How could we say they are wrong? If this is what we are left with, why do we keep throwing money at an educational system that is no more than anarchy?

 

Without absolute truth there can be no laws. Law requires the universal claim that there are things that ought not be done, but why not? If there are no absolutes than how do we make the claim that something is a crime?

 

It is these and a thousand other imponderables that leave me bewildered.
